Voice Changes in Young Singers: Female and Male Voice Change with Puberty

Every September, a choir director hears a student open their mouth and thinks: that is not the voice I auditioned in May.

The changing of a voice from it's pre-pubescent shape and size marks one of the defining characteristics of maturation. But to singers and teachers who have worked with the child's voice, the change can be jarring, upsetting, and physically difficult to navigate.

What actually changes

Adolescent voice change is skeletal and soft tissue growth. Through the pubertal years, there is a substantial increase in vocal fold length and divergence between cis-male and cis-female laryngeal dimensions. Folds lengthen with increases in height and longer folds vibrate more slowly, which is why pitch drops. But length is only part of it. The cartilage framework changes shape, and the resonating space above the vocal folds grows, which alters timbre independently of pitch.

Changes in the male voice

Longitudinal study of boys shows the descent in speaking fundamental frequency, roughly an octave, unfolding across an extended stretch of months rather than arriving overnight.¹

More useful for voice teachers is the work relating voice change to pubertal staging rather than chronological age.³ Age does not predict where a student is. Development does, which is why two boys in the same grade can be in entirely different vocal places, and why treating a section by grade level is a guess.

What students actually notice are phonational gaps: regions in the middle of the range where phonation becomes unreliable or drops out, alongside pitch breaks and a shrinking comfortable range. These have been tracked longitudinally in adolescent boys and are a feature of the process, not evidence of poor technique.⁴

A boy pushed to hold a part above his currently available range will compensate, usually by recruiting muscular effort to force phonation through an unstable register. That is the pattern that produces strain, and over a season, tissue injury. It further reinforces psychologically for developing boys that there is something wrong with their voice or technique if they no longer can access notes at the top that they used to. This can become disturbing to their vocal identity, and in extreme cases, result in a condition called puberphonia, where pitch is "stuck" in a pre-pubertal pitch despite maturation of the vocal folds to a lower fundamental pitch.

Changes in the female voice

Another common misunderstanding is the assumption that girls do not go through a voice change.

It is less dramatic acoustically but longitudinal tracking of thirteen-year-old girls has documented measurable change in speaking fundamental frequency, voice range, and the appearance of pitch breaks across the year.⁵ The instability is real and measurable.

What makes this more than academic is how girls experience it. Qualitative research into the adolescent female changing voice describes students who know something is wrong, who cannot rely on their upper range week to week, and who have no framework for understanding it because everyone treats voice change as a boys' phenomenon.⁶ A girl whose high notes have become unreliable, and who has been told girls do not go through voice change, has one explanation left available to her: that she is doing it wrong. That produces both effortful compensatory singing and quiet withdrawal from performance.

Normal instability versus an actual problem

Families need a clear line here, because "it is just puberty" can become a reason to ignore something that deserves attention.

Developmental change looks like gradual shifts over months, a range that fluctuates but is present, breaks that move as development proceeds, and a comfortable speaking voice even when singing is unpredictable. There is no pain and no hoarseness at rest.

What warrants evaluation: hoarseness in the speaking voice persisting beyond two to three weeks, pain or effort with ordinary speech, sudden rather than gradual range loss, a voice reliably worse at the end of every rehearsal day that has stopped recovering overnight, and any complete voice loss.

These deserve attention because adolescent voice disorders are more common than most schools assume. In a 2024 study of 502 adolescents aged 13 to 17, researchers found a 24.3 percent lifetime prevalence and a 7.4 percent current prevalence of voice problems. Risk factors included frequent loud talking, coughing, throat clearing, and participation in singing and performance extracurriculars, and voice problems were associated with reduced extracurricular participation and school absences.⁷ The students in your choir and theater programs are the higher-risk group.

What to do this Fall

Reassess placement in September rather than carrying previous spring assignments forward, and ask students directly about range changes instead of waiting for them to volunteer that something is wrong. Treat "that note used to be there" as clinical information.

The most useful thing a performing arts student can do at the start of a school year is establish a baseline with a laryngologist while the voice is healthy, so that if something changes mid-season there is a comparison point rather than a guess.
